What is Bridging Worlds?
What is it not?
IT is For the Arts Community & Beyond
These materials are designed for the whole Ontario arts sector—individuals and organizations, Jews and non-Jews alike. Bridging Worlds can be used to open up conversations with artistic collaborators and teams, or to help unpack scenarios where harm has been caused. In each case, the resources are intended to build towards greater understanding and repair. While these resources were created specifically for the Ontario arts sector, they can also be used in other regions and sectors.
IT is Just the Beginning
Bridging Worlds is a work-in-progress, intended to spark inquiry, discourse, and further engagement. We aim to revise this guide as we continue to incorporate feedback and new learnings. Additional modules are anticipated alongside programmatic initiatives.
IT is Not a Comprehensive Exploration of Jewish Experience
Bridging Worlds is an introductory resource that points to Jewish diversity.
This initial module cannot do justice to all experiences of Jewish culture or persecution. We have intentionally focused on Euro-Christian antisemitism, as it forms the foundation of the history of antisemitism in Canada. Simultaneously, we have made an effort to include a diverse range of narratives. Our collaborators include Jews of Colour, Jews of multi-ethnic descent, Mizrahi Jews, and Sephardi Jews. We endeavour to widen the lens in future phases of our work, specifically pertaining to Jewish experiences in the regions of Southwest Asia and North Africa.
While a comprehensive exploration of Jewish culture, ethnicity, religion, and identity is beyond the scope of this module, we have developed a growing list of readings, films, albums, podcasts, and other works of art that together highlight Jewish cultural diversity and expression. EXPLORE
Does Not Unpack Topics Relating to Israel / Palestine
We believe that understanding the dynamics of antisemitism is an essential step towards more meaningful conversations about the historic and present-day realities in Israel and Palestine. While Bridging Worlds does not directly address Israel/Palestine, it does aim to provide one piece of the understanding necessary as we build our capacity for difficult conversations. Building this capacity also requires deepening understanding of the experiences of Muslims, Arabs, and Palestinians, and the histories and dynamics of the oppressions these communities face. We strongly encourage arts organizations to seek out learning in these areas, and we aim to expand our network of project partners to include more Muslim and Palestinian voices.
